Most doctors will say that over the counter wart removers are safe as long as you know for sure that you have a wart. Many times, callouses are mistaken for a wart. If in doubt, ask your doctor.
Many over-the-counter wart treatments contain salicylic acid. This is what you find in products like compound W. The success rate is about 50% and it can take as much as 6 weeks. Other treatments work by "freezing" the wart. This method takes about 2-3 treatments and again, you are looking at a 40-50% success rate. This takes about 10 days if it works.
Over-the-counter treatments aren't recommended for common warts on the face or lips and should not be used on genital warts. See your doctor about treatments for those warts.
